Why Gym Memberships Are a Waste of Money

The New Year is now in full swing and you know what that means. People who normally don’t workout are now trying to become regular exercisers. Typically these people have no idea what they need to do. They decide that the best thing for them is to buy a gym membership.

When you buy a gym membership, you normally won’t buy it on a month-to-month basis. Gyms are smart. If you buy for the whole year, they will lower the cost per month. For those people who want to make a difference this New Year, you might think, “This will force them to have to go to the gym the whole year.” The reality of it is… they don’t.

When someone first starts any new habit, they are excited. The first week they get the membership, they’re at the gym every single day. Week two comes along and they’re still at the gym, but it’s not as often as that first week. This trend continues steadily until, by December, they just paid a monthly membership to go to the gym less than 5 times the whole month.

Why is this?

Are these people lazy?

Are they not serious about their new goals for the new year?

If you have any sort of background in exercise, it can be difficult for you to completely understand where they’re coming from. For example, I’ve been lifting and working out at a very high level since I was 14 years old. I got a degree in exercise science, and I love to listen and read all about new research that’s out there.

Most people aren’t like that though.

Most of you were probably active in high school, you might’ve done a little bit more movement in college, but then once you got your big boy or girl job, you stopped. You were either too busy, or you simply didn’t know what to do.

I’ve found that most people who are unable to stick with their healthy New Years resolutions don’t know what is is they want. They give themselves broad, unclear goals, and even if their goals are clear, they have no way of knowing what they need to do to get there. That’s like trying to get to New York City from LA without a map or GPS. It’s going to take you much longer, and you’re more likely to give up out of frustration along the way.

If you’re serious this year about making a difference with your health, then here are four things for you to do that will be better then getting a gym membership.


1. Prioritize your workout time.

We all have busy lives. We have work, family, friends, and hobbies. When there’s something new that we need to start doing, we tend to procrastinate. If you don’t have at least 30 minutes to 1 hour blocked away, 3 or more times per week, then you will never get started. Not only do you need to block this time out, but you need to protect that time as well. If you want to make serious changes in your life, you’re going to need to say no to something. For example, if it’s Friday at 4 and your workout block is from 4:30-5:30, you need to protect that. If your co-workers want to go to Happy Hour at that time and ask you to join, you need to learn to say no.


2. Start small

If you’re currently not going to the gym at all, you should not try to go to the gym 7 days a week. You need to start small. Go 2 days a week for 30 minutes. After a couple of weeks, increase how long you go. Then after a month, add another day. 


3. Hire a personal trainer

If you don’t know what you need to be doing in the gym to reach your goals, then you need to hire a personal trainer. A personal trainer will tell you exactly what it is that you need to do, will walk you through it, and will hold you accountable. 


4. Set goals you’re excited about

You need to know where you’re going. You can’t simply go into the new year saying “I’m going to get in shape.” What do you actually want? Do you want to lose 20 lbs? Gain some muscle? Have more energy? You need to get clear about what it is that you want. Most personal trainers can help you make sure that your goals are both realistic and specific.

If you want to make a difference in you’re health this year, whatever you do, don’t waste your money on a gym membership. Follow the 4 steps above, and you will definitely make some big changes in your health this year.
